Environment And Health Condition of Tanning Industry: A Case Study of Pakistan

The tannery industry in Korangi Industrial Area (KIA), Sheikhupura Road & Multan Industrial Estate (MIE), which is one of the most polluted areas in Karachi, Lahore and Multan, respectively produces a huge quantity of wastes every day. Without effluents treatment, the tanneries known as ‘’Kachy Ka Kaam” are discharged into the Malir River, Ravi River & Chenab River and pollute the surrounding environment. This paper examines the impacts of tanning industry wastes on labors’ health and the environment in those areas. A structured questionnaire was directed in order to acquire quantitative data and 70 respondents were interviewed using convenience-based sampling, as part of the methodology. The verdicts of the study signify that tanning industry wastes affect the environment sternly, triggering ecological discrepancy and the dispersal of different kinds of lethal and infectious disease among the labors of leather tanning industry and other individuals. Moreover, the current waste management system of the Korangi Industrial Area, Multan Industrial Estate, and Sheikhupura Road leather tanning industries are very suspicious due to outdated technology, poor drainage systems, lack of finance, and the prejudiced attitude of their owners. This empiric study assists policy makers employ applicable measures to erect awareness, among both owners and labors, that can sway changes in the management and workers’ attitude and reduce pollution to a great extent. Although substantial research has been commenced directing on tanning industry waste impact assessment, less interest has been given to the issue of labors’ health. Therefore, both government officials and policy makers can benefit from the verdicts of this article
